The Atlantic Slave Trade: Crash Course World History #24
In which John Green teaches you about a single of the least humorous subjects in historical past: slavery. John investigates when and exactly where slavery originated, how it modified in excess of the centuries, and how Europeans and colonists in the Americas arrived at the thought that men and women could own other people primarily based on skin color. Slavery has existed as prolonged as people have had civilization, but the Atlantic Slave Trade was the height, or depth, of dehumanizing, brutal, chattel slavery. American slavery ended significantly less than 150 many years ago. In some elements of the planet, it is still going on. So how do we reconcile that with contemporary existence? In a desperate try at comic relief, Boba Fett tends to make an look. I am a very big fan of everything this site represents (namely, John Green, history, and the internet), however, I find it woefully deficient on the topic of pirates. During this one, I thought of the Barbary pirates from northern Africa who raided European settlements. I’d love to know more in the context of the slave trade in general. Keep the crash courses coming and thanks!
Though not slavery by definition, a poor public education system dooms the disfranchised families with no other option but public education into a repetitive cycle of doing the work they can find, rather than the work that they choose. This accomplishes a goal similar to slavery, getting other people to do the unattractive work that is necessary, without giving up the majority of the profits earned from it. Further complicated by a society where wealth seemingly assesses your worth as a person.
no, I did not know that aristotle always goes full throttle. the things i’ve learned on this show.
As a Swede I can be proud to say that we made slavery forbidden in 1335(2 years away, oh so close). There was slavetrade made by swedish ships outside of the country but it was a mere 0,1% of the total amount that took place during the Atlantic slave trade period. Sidenote to the wünderful Mr.(Dr?) Meyer and Mr(Dr?).Green. Please include us nordics more as you seem to have forgotten about us. Or is our history just That uninteresting? Perhaps an episopde about of the Vikings would be in order?

It’s more of a “everyone on the block is a serial killer but I’m going to turn my dad in and not say a word about the rest”.
You need to research psychology of modern liberalism. I’m by no means a conservative or republican, etc. but basically the liberal academic establishment, which John Green is clearly a product of, vilifies men, western civilization, “Caucasians”, etc and creates a psychology of self hate — even if you or your family had no part in anyone’s oppression.
Why does admitting one’s ancestors did horrible things (and not all white people’s ancestors owned slaves, in fact a lot of Europeans have been slaves in all but name for a long time before the modern era) make one ‘self-hating’? Are you the same person as your parents? Everyone has ancestors who did horrible things, and good things. This idea of ‘self-hating’ implies that we shouldn’t go to the police when our father is a serial killer
If you looked at the title, he’s talking specifically about the Atlantic slave trade. If you watched the whole video, you would have heard him talk about how the Islamic slave trade partially influenced the Atlantic one. but no, the Islamic slave trade was not ‘the reason’ there was a slave trade, and the fact that someone else did something horrible first doesn’t mean it’s ok for others to do it
a square foot is a unit of measuring area. whether the shape is a square, trapezoid, circle, or any other 2D shape is irrelevant. ’4 square feet’ means the area encompassed is equal in area to 4 squares whose sides all measure 1 foot. I can’t tell if you’re a dumb troll, just plain dumb, or just have a very strange way of amusing yourself…
LOL…you do realise you rare actually mentally ill, right? I mean, that HAS been pointed out to you, surely?
Please show me where the 200,000,000 non-white people are in Europe and the US. (you said HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS, that means over 200,000,000). I can wait all day, all decade. I study population demographics as part of my job, so I have access to ‘the facts’. Show me where to look, you racist fuckwit.
